The Cowsills In Magazines

Susan Cowsill: What She's Really Like
March 1970
Tiger Beat Magazine

Sometimes it can get pretty lonesome being the only girl in an all male family! For one thing, there's no one to pal around with or to whisper secrets to, and there isn't anyone to discuss the latest gossip or new fashion trends with!

Once in a while this loneliness descends upon Susan Cowsill and then she goes out for a very long walk or retreats to her room to listen to records.

EXTREMELY HAPPY

Of course her brothers understand her feelings at times like this and carefully leave her alone for a while. Then, to help her over this difficult time John and Barry might grab on to her and threaten to toss her into the pool, or suggest a ride to the nearest lunch stand for her favorite of lobster and french-fries! If Paul gets hold of her, he'll usually tickle her into forgetting all about being lonely!

There's what it's like living with a family of boys and Susan is the first to admit that 99 per cent of the time she's an extremely happy "only girl!" It's mostly because she seldom has a chance to feel blue for she's surrounded by a very groovy bunch of guys and two wonderful and loving parents!

Associating with so many boys has made quite a tomboy of Susan, except when it comes to boy friends. Then she's all lady, and her big solft brown eyes gently sparkle!

But in between, she excels at climbing trees, has a good throwing arm for baseball, and can get the basketball through the hoop half of the time! When she's not in a mod mini-skirt (as mini as Mini-Mom will allow) Susan wears jeans or bellbottoms and pullover shirts. Her favorite colors are blue and bright pink so some of her outfits are really wild color combinations!

SUCH A HAM

One of her favorite pastimes is watching television and Susan will tell you she never misses "Bewitched" or "Here Comes the Brides." Usually John and Barry will join her for they enjoy these programs as much as she!

Part of the reason Susan is such an avid television viewer is her desire to become an actress. Although she is content at the present to sing and perform with her family, she hopes to eventually branch out into the field of acting!

PIGGY-BACK RIDES are just part of the fun when you have older brothers like Susan Cowsill. Susan says they are always there when she needs them.

She's getting a lot of practice at it too, Barry laughs. "She's such a ham. Whenever someone comes over she always puts on a big act!"

One of the happiest moments in Susan's life came when she got a little black puppy for her birthday one year. The dog, called Subar, is a poodle and is Susan's constant companion. The two are almost inseparable and if you're looking for one, chances ae you'll find the other in the same place!

WILLING TO HELP

Sometimes if Susan has a problem she needs help with and Mini-Mom isn't around, she'll ask Bob or Paul for a bit of advice. "That's one of the nice things about older brothers," says Susan. "Though they sometimes tease you a lot, they're always willing to help out when you need it!"

All the Cowsill boys agree that Susan is a pretty good "kid-sister!" According to John, when she was younger she would get underfoot a lot and wanted things her way all the time. But now that she's older, he says, she's coming along alright!

ALTHOUGH SHE'S JUST 10 years old, Susan speaks very well and is able to express her views articulately.

One thing the boys do always tease Susan about is her fear of ghosts! Since the two younger boys are interested in astrology, Ouji boards and anything pertaining to the supernatural, Susan has started believing in it too! Barry often gives her a good fright by putting on an old monster mask and scaring her in the dark!

Another thing Susan has a slight fear of is high cliffs, or any heights for that matter. The fifth step of a ladder is as far as she's willing to go! "I'm really trying to overcome this, though," says Susan. "I miss out on all the groovy high rides at amusement parks!"

SHOULDN'T BE BOSSY

Of course Susan is much too young to date but that hasn't stopped her forming an opinion about the kind of guy she'd like to meet someday. "I like blond hair and blue eyes on boys," she'll tell you with a touch of shyness in her voice, "but the most important thing, is a nice personality and he shouldn't be bossy!"

Being as sweet and talented as she is, Susan probably won't have any trouble in the romance department when the time is right!

SUBAR, SUSAN'S POOLDE is her best friend and constant companion. They spend hours playing together.
