Paul Cowsill: What He's Really Like
June 1970

Paul

"I'm just happy to be alive," say Paul Cowsill in a very serious manner and then a smile slowly lights up his handsome face. "Man, being alive is a groove - especially when you're with people you love!"

Paul Cowsill is the kind of person who really likes people! In fact, when he's feeling a bit lonely or down nothing snaps him out of it faster than a phone call from a friend or just one of the guys who happens to drop by!

SEEMED SO COLD
"When the family first came out to California, " Paul recalls, "I didn't like it at all! Everyone seemed so cold and so wrapped up in their own world! I suppose it was because I was a stranger myself and being somewhat of an introvert I felt I didn't belong!"

"That's when my family really came in handy and I think that's when I realized how important a family can be! Maybe we didn't know anyone in town, but we had each other!"

Since then, Paul says he's grown very fond of the Cowsill home in Santa Monica and of course he's made so many new friends and fans he couldn't begin to count them all. "Things really shaped up," he laughs. "I really love it here now!"

One of the reasons Paul is much happier lately is because he got his driver's license! "All I have to get now is the car," he admits, and for Paul the ideal car is a red convertible Camero!

Born in Virginia on November 11, 1951, Paul is a very quiet guy, though he can be quite outspoken when he wants to be heard! He's not shy at all, just extremely introverted at times. Perhaps it is this quietness in Paul that sometimes keeps him from telling others about his problems!

"I usually work out my own problems because they seem too stupid to bother anyone else with," he says. "I walk around with a problem hanging over me and my Dad can usually sense that something's wrong and then he'll ask what's bugging me. I never come right out with it until he asks. Maybe that's wrong, I don't know."

FIRST THING
But being quiet doesn't bother Paul and, in fact, it is one of the first things he notices in others - especially girls! "I like girls who are very quiet! I don't mean shy - although sometimes that is attractive too - but I mean really quiet almost to a turn-off point. There's something mysterious about a quiet girl and it's sort of a challenge to a guy!"

What else does Paul notice about a girl? "Cheeks! I think cheeks are outasite," he says. "I notice what a girl looks like in general, of course, her hair, her eyes, the way she walks and talks, but what really gets to me are cheeks - any kind - round, rosey or pail!"

Acting immature is definitely one things that Paul doesn't go for in a girl! "This doesn't mean she's got to act grown up all the time - that doesn't have anything to do with being mature! But she should be able to take care of herself and conduct herself properly in any situation that might arise!"

WALK ON AND ON
In his spare time, Paul likes to listen to folk music, read his horoscope or go to the beach. "The beach is a great place for two reasons. It's great when you want to be by yourself because you can walk on and on with only the sea as your companion. Other times when you're feeling romantic it's groovy to walk along the shore laughing and talking with one of your favorite girls!"

Paul says that one of the happiest moments of his life was when the Cowsills walked on stage at their recent Las Vegas opening. "We really had a good time and everyone was super to us!"

"Its a good feeling to know that you're appreciated and I guess it's important to everyone. It makes me feel proud to know that when the Cowsills are entertaining the people in the audience can forget their own worries for a while and just enjoy themselves!"

Where does Paul plan to go in the future? "Into movies. I think that I would really enjoy acting. The only thing that would be a drag is rehearsals but characterization is an art in itself. It takes a good actor to make an audience believe everything he's doing!"

But Paul's in no hurry and he takes things as they come. He says that for now he's content just being one of the Cowsills, playing organ, piano and singing - as if that isn't enough!

Caption: Paul used to be on the shy side, but performing has made him more outgoing and now he loves to meet and talk to people wherever they go.
