Cowsill Marathon V

Taste Of Rhode Island
September 27-28, 2003
Newport, Rhode Island

Hugest thanks to Bob for putting together a "perfectly marvelous" show. To quote Martha J. "If they get any better, I don't think I can stand it!" The sound mix was wonderful this year. Good job Frank!

We enjoyed the wonderful sights, tastes and smells of Newport, Rhode Island once again for Cowsill Marathon V. (Yes it was a marathon as I got about 2 hours sleep the last 48 hours). Joining us there (Sorry I know I'm missing some! Let me know and I'll add you in.) AJ and Harrison, Barb from CO, Barb (Louise's friend), Bruce O, Caren, Cheryl, Chris from VA, Claire from Newport, Colleen, Connie, Darlene, Debbie, Eileen, Gina, Jeana, Jo, Judy,Kathryn, Kathy Mc, Katie, Kim T, Louise, Lynn M, Lynne H, Lynne M, Marilynn and Ken, Martha and Marsha J., MOSS-E, Nan, Rich (Captain Sad) and wife Marty, Sandy, Suzanne,Steve and the twins, Tracy, Vicky and of course me, Becky. I know I saw several Marathon shirts whose owners I never got to meet.

For me the week began on Monday the 22nd when I met Lynn M and we started our high adventures up in MA. We went to Salem, Boston (where we met Sandy for lunch on Wednesday and Connie, Jeana, Eileen and Ari (Eileen's friend) for lunch at the Hard Rock on Thursday), then on to Plymouth before ending out trek in Newport. We also drove to Newport on Wednesday night to hear Barry play at Billy Goode's making it back to Boston at 3 AM. Those helping us celebrate on Wednesday were Lynne H, Lynn M, Caren, Kathryn, Colleen, Lynne M, Martha, and Marsha. Barry was wonderful and we sure had a good time !!

The band this year included: Bob Cowsill, Richard Cowsill, Paul Cowsill, Barry Cowsill, Susan Cowsill, Russ Broussard, Robby Scharf, Johnny Flanders, Ryan Cowsill, Mike McDonald and MaryJo Cowsill. Thanks guys and girls. We didn't want it to end. (Do we ever???)

I usually do a "Top Ten" list, but I fear this year I have many more, so here goes:

TOP 35 LESSONS LEARNED AT CMV

1. Watching The Cowsills have fun on stage is a heart warming experience.

2. Brother John is in severe danger of losing his drumming position with the C's. Awesome job Russ!! So fun to watch!

3. Speaking of Russ, newlywed-ness sure looks good on Susan!!

4. Watch out for Lawrence - Lawrence of Arabia (Barry).

5. The next generation is off to a good start. Wonderful job Ryan! (Paul's son according to the newspaper, but didn't I also read in a newspaper once that Brendon was John's???)

6. Watch out for monitors and posts, but HAVE NO FEAR, SUPER GENTLEMAN PAUL IS HERE!

7. Bob was right. The Black Pearl does have the best Clam Chowder.

8. Don't blink or you'll miss Cowsill Lane.

9. No view of Halidon Hall can be seen from any angle. (Trust me, we tried.)

10. Johnny Flanders is a really great and mega-talented guy. By the way, they don't sell MEATLOAF at ToRI.

11. If you ever need to charm a Newport cop, check with Darlene for tips.

12. Paul can still do Crystal Claps in the original key.

13. All I Really Want To Be Is Me topped Simon and Garfunkel's Sounds of Silence in a local radio contest.

14. Heaven is sailing off the coast of Newport in a sailboat.

15. Beware of Cowsill boys when in a hotel with ice machines.

16. Paul once won a dare contest by standing for 24 hours on a bus going from Miami Beach to New Orleans.

17. Rich did a great job filling in for Bill on All I Really Want To Be Is Me.

18. Susan had one ("Fine howdy-a-do THAT is") classmate in attendance.

19. I know it's nothing new, but fascinating watching a great bass player (Robby) at work.

20. Whole concerts can be heard via cell phones.

21. You need to get more that 1 1/2 hours sleep before a 4:45 wake up call.

22. Don't get off the subway at South Street to go to the Hard Rock in Boston.

23. Both legs of the Freedom Trial can be done in one day. Your feet will be fine, but your shoes will be really tired.

24. When you get to the "Difficult Trail Ahead" sign on The Cliff Walk, believe it !!

25. According to Caren, skydiving is beyond incredible.

26. Front couple rows of seats need to be aware of flying microphones.

27. In Salem, turn the map upside down and backwards and you will get to where you want to go. Also ancestors may not always turn out to be such good guys.

28. There is no Cowsill memorabilia in the Hard Rock Boston.

29. I want to hear a second generation Cowsill band to match the first. How about Travis, Ryan, Bryan, Brendon, Colin, Will, and Miranda? Lynn adds that Susan should fill in with the Barbara parts.

30. There are more Dunkin Donuts and McDonalds in MA than there are Kennedy's.

31. Folks in Randolph, MA love to double charge for everything. Beware.

32. The hidden stairwell in the House Of Seven Gables is totally awesome !!

33. Barry can sound just like a 15-year-old John singing Folsom Prison Blues.

34. Pumpkin pie for breakfast isn't such a bad idea. Thanks for finding it Caren !!

35. When jumping off a diving board, make sure you look up and are sure Bob isn't jumping off above you on purpose.

Now on to the pictures!!
