SOUTH CAROLINA COLONIAL LAND GRANTS

(Ed. Note: Sylvia Castles, 841 Garden Dale Dr., Columbia, S.C. 29210 has compiled the following list of colonial land grants and plats now at the S.C. Archives. Photocopies of the grants and the plats have been provided by her and are being placed in our Association archive. Land was often awarded to immigrants in parcels of 50 acres to a man and 50 acres for each dependent, including slaves. Prior to 1776 the officials of the royal colony granted land to settlers in a four-step process: 1) The individual desiring land petitioned for the property he wanted; 2) A warrant was issued to the surveyor to survey the land and describe it with a small map; 3) The land was surveyed, the plat drawn and recorded; 4) A grant to the private owner was made and recorded.)

Applications should be accompanied by family group sheets for the Presley (etc.) family line. Dues are $10 per year; associate membership (spouses) dues $5 per year, payable on July 1st. New members receive all back issues for the current membership year. Dues received after March 1st will be applied to the following year beginning July 1st.
Inquiries concerning material in the Association archives should be addressed to the Research Director, James E. Anderson, (address withheld). and should be accompanied by a large self-addressed, stamped envelope.
FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK
With the mailing of this issue, members will have received 78 pages this year filled with family data, queries, articles, etc. Where else could you get so much information for just ten dollars? By changing printers your Association has been able to cut costs, to add pages to each issue, to provide for some additional advertising of the organization (already we've had an increase in membership), and to set aside additional funds for research next year.
That's why I can now proudly ask you to renew your membership for 1989-1990 i Yes, I know that twelve months have gone by so rapidly since I last made that request, and all the other bills have gone up equally fast, but here's one fee that hasn't been raised. The majority of you agreed to a possible increase in annual dues, but we're going to hold the line for another year. With the continued support of each of you, we'll get even better, so please don't forget to return your renewal form with a check for dues for next year.
At the same time, please mark and return the enclosed ballot for the election of officers for 1989-1991. The deadline for returning the ballots is June 26. You'll see a new name on the ballot this time, a portent of better things to come. I anticipate that the next two years will be an important period of growth and transition for our Association. The officers will need your support,- and your participation in the election and your renewal of membership are two ways to expre that support.

GOOD HELP IS HARD TO KEEP
This newspaper clipping is from the Pennsylvania Gazette, Philadelphia, Nov. 17, 1738, printed by Benjamin Franklin. It was contributed by Elizabeth B. Bunting, address withheld. The same, or a similar, notice concerning these runaway servants appeared in the Virginia Gazette in Williamsburg, Va., on the same date. Col. Peter Presly, grandson of the immigrant, William Presly, was born prior to 1657 and was a justice, a colonel in the militia, sheriff, and a burgess from 1710 to 1749. He was murdered by one of his black servants in 1750, who was tried and sentenced to be hung. Col. Presly, last male Presly of his line, left many descendants, but his beautiful mansion overlooking the Potomac River, Northumberland House, is long gone.

Southern Claims Commission
(Ed. Note: The Southern Claims Commission was established by the U.S. Congress in March 1871 for the purpose of considering the war claims of Southern loyalists who had suffered losses at the hands of the Union army or who had aided the Union army during the late war. It was not intended to compensate Southerners for losses occasioned by "unofficial" acts by Union troops, such as the pillaging by Sherman's bummers, and such claims were denied.
The records of this Commission in the National Archives are a little known source of genealogical data, and shouldn't be overlooked by researchers of South! ern families, even those who had obvious sympathies with the Confederacy, since the latter sometimes filed claims which were denied. The index to these records has been published in Civil War Claims in the South. An Index of Civil Claims Filed Before the Southern Claims Commission, 1871-1880, by Gary B. Mills, Laguna Hills, Calf., 1980.

I am trying to gather information about my great
grandfather, William M. Presler/Pressler. When
he came from Germany, he changed his name from
Bressler. He was born 9 Sept. 1817 in Germany,
or Centre Co., Penn.; died 14 May 1910 in Glen
Elder, Kan.; married firstly, 16 Feb. 1843, to Elmina (Boden) Crabill; married
secondly, 8 May 1884, to Mary Lydia Gates (my gr. grandmother). His middle name
could have been McCall, and he had three brothers, Jacob, John, and George. Any
information would be appreciated.

My wife and I were just recently called to be local missionaries for our church. This means we try to fellowship some of our inactive members back into activity and help the full time missionaaries teach nonmembers about our church.
Then, right after this happened (about March 1st), I had a minor heart attack. There was minimal damage, [but] this will slow me down some I am sure.

A Presley reunion is held every second Saturday of August at Selkirk Shores State Park (on Lake Ontario) in New York for descendants of William H. Presler (1837-1911) of Oswego Co., but all kin and friends are welcome.

Some of you have received the above postcard regarding new publications. We have no information as yet about the people who are producing this periodical and "Registry", but we'll keep you informed if and when we learn anything more. Meanwhile, we have just seen a copy of the "Registry" and the first issue of the "News".
The "Registry" is a 26-page, soft-cover, spiral-bound listing of 4469 names and addresses. A quick cross-check with our membership list indicates that this directory lists none of the PRESSLY/PRESSLEY/PRESLAR/PRESSLER/BRESSLER variants that we know are sometimes related, so if your name isn't spelled PRESLEY, you aren't listed.
There is nothing in either of these publications to indicate that the publishers recognize that PRESSLY/PRESSLEY is the traditional Irish spelling of the surname, or that a great many PRESLEYs in this country have German PRESSLER/PRESLAR roots, or that the English origin of the name is PRIESTLEY.
"The Presley Family News" is a 12-page attractively-printed publication, the named Editor and Genealogist of which are not listed in the current Denver telephone directory. The lead article, Part 1 of a "History of the Presley Family ...", consists of exactly 16 "sentences" (not all are complete sentences) with the informative statement that the Presleys emerged from the "genetic goop" of the "English Isles". No specific genealogical or biographical information on individual Presleys or Presley families is in this issue, but there is a plea for readers to submit photos, biographies, genealogies, etc.
There is also an announcement of plans to publish "within 6 months" a Who's Who in the Presley Family to sell for $35 plus $4 shipping, the primary sources for which will be the IGI, the census data, and the "Registry", with some military records, immigration records, burial records, sports records, etc.
