A PRESSLY FAMILY IN TEXAS

(Ed. Note: The following extract is from a letter shared with us by James B. Pressly, M.D., 317 Mockingbird Hill, Greenville, S.C. 29605 and written to his late uncle, Dr. W.L. Pressly of Due West, S.C. (see page thirty-three).)

December 18, 1948
Los Angeles, Calif.

Dear Doctor:
I was very happy indeed to observe in the local newspapers that you recently had been so highly honored.

Being a member of the official family of the Post Office Department, with varied duties which has permitted me to travel a great deal, I have either met or heard of many persons whose name is spelled the same as yours and mine. In every case it seemed that their forefathers had their beginning somewhere in your state and possibly all were related.

My grandfather was Doctor Thomas A. Pressly, a dentist. He was born in South Carolina near Abbeville about 1818. Married Clara Arnold and moved to Lisbon County, Arkansas about 1868, thence to Sweet Home, Texas, about 1872. Passed away at Houston in 1909. My grandmother had (a) brother whose name was David Arnold, the Christian name given my father and later to me.

My father, Dr. D.A. Pressly, was a graduate of Alabama State Medical College, Mobile. He practiced medicine at Yoakum, Texas, for about 36 years. Died there in 1914 at the age of 64. There were three other brothers of my father, namely James A. who passed away at Houston in 1931, William, who died early in life somewhere in East Texas, and Dr. Thomas Pressly who practiced medicine at Runge, Texas, for' upward of 35 years. He passed away about 1938. His son Thomas Jr. is a successful physician in San Antonio.

There are four living brothers in my family. James T. resides in Bisbee, Arizona. Saxon is at Mercedes, Texas. Elmer is in New Orleans. There are two sisters. Miss Ruby, about 40, is employed by the Texas Highway Department at Houston. Mrs. Julia Riggs, a widow, the oldest now 61, resides in San Antonio. My mother was Josephine Cook. She passed away in 1931.

My father's health failed early in life, which situation prevented me from becoming a doctor. Economic conditions would not permit me to leave my family. I entered the Postal Service in 1915, after which I received many promotions. I became an inspector in 1925, and was sent to San Francisco. I have lived at Los

New members receive all back issues for the current membership year. Dues received after March 1st will be applied to the following year beginning July

Inquiries concerning material in the Association archives should be addressed to the Research Director, James E. Anderson, (address withheld) and should be accompanied by a large self-addressed, stamped envelope.

FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK
I have been very pleased and appreciative for the group sheets, newspaper clippings, original articles, biographical sketches, copies of letters, etc. which members have submitted to the newsletter. Without this participation by members our publication could not be as frequent or as interesting. This sharing of documents hidden away in our personal files, data from books unavailable to other researchers, and results of many years of individual research is what will make our Association a long-term success.

I am convinced more than ever that a cooperative effort such as this is the most efficient, inexpensive, and fun way to solve many of the difficult genealogical problems that people face. It's for certain that not every issue of the newsletter will have specific data on your direct ancestral line, but I do hope that you will find something that will be of interest to you about the family name.

Therefore, I hope that you will continue to send me additional material for the newsletter. It is always needed and welcome.

Speaking of sharing, I would like very much to hear from those of you who haven't previously written to me, or shared information on your particular family line, or submitted a query for the newsletter. If we don't know in what family you're interested, how can we watch out for data that might be of particular interest to you? PLEASE share with us a copy of your family group sheet if you haven't previously done so.

WILLIAM LOWRY PRESSLY

When he went back to his home town in 1915 to practice medicine, young Dr. William Lowry Pressly worked under a small handicap. It was embarrassing to be remembered, and hailed, as "Buck." But before long he was "Dr. Buck." After 33 years he is still Dr. Buck to most of the 2,250 people in Due West (so called because the original settlement, DeWitt's Corner, was moved two miles due west early in the 19th Century), S.C. But in other ways, times have changed.

In wintertime, when the roads were too bad even for a model T, Dr. Buck used to make his calls in a horse & buggy. He traded in his model Ts every four months, and wore out 22. Last week the American Medical Association, meeting in St. Louis, picked Dr. Buck, 61, from three nominees offered by the board of trustees, as the general practitioner of the year.

The gold medal and certificate given to him, Dr. Pressly says, mark the approaching end of the old country doctor who worked alone. And a good thing, too, he thinks.
Time 52:87 (13 Dec. 1948)

Dr. Pressly was born in Due West on Dec. 2, 1887, graduated at Erskine College in 1908, received his medical education at Emory University, and served as intern and resident at Jefferson Hospital in Roanoke, Va., from 1912 to 1915. As a young man he played professional baseball to earn money to study medicine and for a time was manager of the Norfolk, Va., team.

He served during World War I and was a member of the Council on Medical Education & Hospitals of the AMA (1949-1954), a councilor of the S.C. Medical Association (1933-1940) of which he was elected president, president of the Abbe-ville County Medical Society, vice-president of the Tri-State Medical Association of the Carolinas & Virginia, chairman of the general practice section and member of the executive committee of the council of the Southern Medical Association, chairman of the general practice section of the S.C. Academy of General Practice, member of the executive committee of the S.C. State Board of Health, physician and trustee for Erskine College where in 1948 he received the honorary degree of doctor of laws for his "great humanitarian work", and state head of the Procurement and Assignment Service during World War II. He was awarded the gold medal by the House of Delegates of the AMA in 1948 "for exceptional service by a general practitioner."

He died at age 66 on September 27, 1954 of brain tumor. He was survived by two daughters and three grandchildren.
Compiled from New York Times, 28 Sept. 1954, p. 29, and Journal of the American Medical Association 138:1159 (18 Dec. 1948) and 156:1097 (13 Nov. 1954). See also The Pressly Family , Win. L. Pressly, p. 54-55.

SOPHIA PRESLEY

Sophia Presley, M.D., whose office is at 405 Perm Street, Camden, N.J./ is one of the most successful and widely known women physicians of the day. A daughter of William and Letitia (Moore) Presley, she was born in County Fermanagh, Ireland. Her grandfather, James Presley, was a well-to-do farmer and large landowner in Fermanagh; and in that county her father was born.

William Presley was reared and educated in his native place, and for some time was extensively engaged in farming there. In 1850 he sailed for America, taking with him his wife and children. The little family landed in New York, and then, travelling westward to Ohio, settled in Steubenville, Jefferson County, whej Mr. Presley, who was a well-educated man, afterward obtained a position as clerk in a glass manufactory. He is now living in that city, retired from active work, being over eighty years old. His wife, Letitia Moore, also a native of Ireland, was a daughter of William Moore. She died at the age of fifty-four, shortly aftei arriving on these shores. Mr. and Mrs. Presley were the parents of three childrer Sophia, the subject of this sketch; Alice, wife of Isaiah James; and William, who resides in Steubenville. The father was a second time married, and by this union had two children. The family are all members of the Episcopal church.

Sophia Presley acquired the rudiments of her education in private schools in her native land before coming to this country. In Ohio she attended the Gran ville Episcopal Seminary, and after graduating began immediately to teach, in orde to pay up the money forwarded for her expenses on that condition. She began her work as assistant teacher in the grammar and high school of Dresden, Ohio, and at the end of four years resigned to take a position in the Barnett Academy at Charlestown, Ind. Here she was associated with her former teachers. She gave instructio in the English language and the higher mathematics for three years; and then, the principal leaving the school, she shortly followed. A year later she went to Wellsville, Ohio, where she was engaged in teaching until 1876.

While in Charlestown she was advised by an eminent physician to study medicine, and for some time prior to resigning her position in the school she studied in private. In 1876 she entered the Woman*s Medical College in Philadelphia; and after graduating in 1879 she was for some time interne at the Woman's Hospital of Philadelphia, and was also demonstrator or instructor in surgery in the Woman's Medical College and clinic physician in the Woman's Hospital. In 1881 she opened an office in Camden, where she was an entire stranger, and by the strength of her unusual merits and her ambition to succeed has worked up a large practice. Her visiting list now includes the best families in the city, and she is called in consultation with the most eminent physicians in Philadelphia and other cities.

An indefatigable worker, Dr. Presley belongs to a number of societies, and has written several valuable papers on medical and sanitary subjects that have been received with approval. She is a member of the Alumni Association of the Woman's Medical College of Philadelphia; a member of the Camden City Medical Society, of which she was for two years Secretary; a member of the Camden County Medical Society and the American Medical association. She is now instructor in the New Jersey Training School for Nurses. Dr. Presley is also a member of the Woman's Club of Camden and the Woman's Park Association, and has written some interesting papers in regard to the latter society, which were published in the Camden papers. She attends worship at St. Paul's Protestant Episcopal Church.

JENKINS PRESLEY (widow Rachel). War of 1812 Pension Appl.
Rachel Presley, age 79, a resident of Tippah Co., Mississippi, and widow of Jenkins Presley, applied for a pension on 17 Feb. 1872. She stated that Jenkins Presley served in the military during the War of 1812 and was drafted in Captain Ready's (or Reedy's) Company of Infantry. She was married to him under the name of Rachel Brown sometime in 1815 by Rogr. Robeson near Chester, Chester Co., South Carolina. Her husband died at Salem, Mississippi, on the last day of September 1843, and she had not since that time remarried. She gave her place of abode as Abner McCoys, Tippah Co., Miss.
The brief of the claim shows that the soldier enlisted on 1 Oct. 1814 and was discharged on 7 Mar. 1815. The claim was rejected, 16 May 1873, for want of proof of marriage, continued widowhood, a certificate of loyalty, and presumptive abandonment of the claim after three months elapsed without hearing from the claimant.

MOSES PRESLEY (widow Malinda). War of 1812 Pension Appl. (39205).
Malinda Presley, age 69, a resident of Putnam Co., Georgia, applied for a pension, as widow of Moses Presley, (continued on next page)

Page 40

on 27 Feb. 1880. She stated that her husband served as a private and sergeant in the company commanded by Captains Charles Carter and John Williams in the War of 1812, being drafted at "Morganton, probably Elbert Co." in 1812 and serving jy until his discharge on 18 Dec. 1814. Moses was born in 1784 in Edgefield Districts! South Carolina, with sandy hair, light florid complexion, light gray eyes, and | died in Putnam Co., Ga., on 30 Nov. 1870. He was married, firstly, to Obedience Palmer who died in Putnam Co., Ga., in 1827, and secondly, to Lucretia Spivey who died in Putnam Co., Ga., in 1829. He was married, thirdly, to the deponent, Malinda Fuller, in Putnam Co., Ga., on 4 Jan. 1830 by William Spivey, Justice of the Peace. They lived in Monroe, Walton Co., Ga., for five years beginning in 1856 before moving back to Putnam Co. in 1862.

There is an affidavit in the file made by Benjamin F. Adams, age 58, and Eaon Harvey, age 70, both merchants of Eatonton, Georgia, who stated they had known Malinda Presley for 30 years and 40 years respectively. Another affidavit was made by John P. Fuller of Putnam Co., who stated that he was a nephew of Malinda (Fuller) Presley and a son of Dr. Simeon Fuller.

The claim was rejected, 24 Nov. 1880, on the ground that a substitute, Silas Barron, performed the service for Moses Presley. Barren's name appeared on the rolls of Capt. John Williams' Company of Georgia Militia, but not on the rolls of Capt. Carter.

QUERIES

Edith Farris
(address withheld)

My husband's grandparents were Elijah Campbell Farris & Charlotte T. Presley. His great-grandparents were Samuel Presley & Matilda Manis. Allen Presley from N.C. might be Samuel's father, and Allen's father might be John Presley of N.C. I have not proven these connections as yet. I am trying to locate anyone who has the same ancestors so that I can correspond with and share research with them.

Would like to correspond with researchers interested in brothers John (1799-1878), Jeremiah (1805 or 1809 New Parma, York - 1883), and Richard (b. 1800-10 N.Y.) Presley of Lake Co., Ohio, or Presleys of Jefferson Co., New York.

... AND REPLIES
by Jim Anderson

Members are advised to resubmit queries if it has been some time since the last one. I am continually getting more information and may have found some more information that will be of help to some of our members.

To Beau Hudgins

You wondered if Andrew Peter Presley could have been the son of Richard of Mecklenburg Co., N.C. I feel certain that this is not possible since we have the list of Richard's children.

To Margaret Wright

Here is the family group for William Hawkins Presley, who is the one that joined the Mormon Church and died before he got to Utah. If you want, I could probably find some desc endants here in Utah.

To Audrey Kinion

Based on 1850-1880 censuses, marriage records, land records, and court recorts of Lincoln Co., Missouri, I have compiled the following family groups for David Presley and each of his children except for Mary who married a Cantrell. I have not as yet been able to find any more information on this couple. The oldest son Peter died quite young sometime before May of 1826. I believe that he is the father of Peter Isaac Presley. There is a problem, though, in that you have his year of birth • as 1829, which, of course, is impossible if his father died in 1826. The reason I feel that Peter Isaac is the son of Peter, the son of David, is because when David died the probate record stated that the estate was to go to the heirs of Peter, the heirs of Jacob, the heirs of Anthony, the heirs of William, David, George, Mary Cantrell, Elizabeth Gilliland, Nancy Cox, Lewis, and Peter. This last Peter is the only son of David Sr. by his second (maybe third) wife, Mary Moore. Note that he had two sons named Peter, but the later Peter was born some time after the first Peter had died. In a later distribution of property the same terminology is used with one exception - the phrase "the heirs of Peter" is replaced by "Isaac". This is the only evidence I have thus far that would indicate that Peter Isaac is the - " son of Peter.

To Edith Farris

Mr. Fulcher claims this Samuel is the son of Alien, who is the son of John, the Revolutionary soldier. I believe that Mr. Fulcher is correct in this claim. Here is family group data adding some more children found in the census records.
I have changed the name of the oldest son to agree with the census records, which have his name as Samuel, instead of Sherman.
