BUNCOMBE CO., N.C., DEEDS

(Ed. Note: The following information relative to early Presley residents of Buncombe Co., N.C., is based on a study of the Buncombe Co. land conveyances. Copies of all pre-1900 deeds were provided by Lillian L. Stumpp, and the complete Summary List & Report (12 pages) compiled by this editor and covering individuals in Buncombe Co. in the later 1800's, has been placed on file in the Association archives.)

DAVID PRESLEY - There was apparently more than one David Presley in Buncombe Co. in the early 1800's. The 1800 census shows a David Presley, age 16-26; the 1810 census shows a David Presley with one male in the household, age 26-45, and another male over 45. In 1820 there was a David Presley, age 16-26; there is no David in the 1830 census, but in 1840 a David Presley is listed, age 30-40.

In the land conveyances David Presley received a grant of 150 acres at the head of Shoal Creek, including the Walnut Cove, on 11 Dec. 1800 (DB k, P 698). In 1BOU David deeded £0a of this land which lay on Cane Creek Mountain, and including Walnut Cove, to Peter Presley (DB 10, p 316). Peter returned this tract to David in 1807 (DB A, p 356).

David Presley received another grant of 100a on both sides of Four Mile Branch on 5 Dec. 1806 (DB ?, p 538). He deeded this tract to Peter Presley on 13 Apr. 1807 (DB A, p 330), who deeded it to Margaret Neeley on the same day

0n 4 Dec. 1815 Peter Presley received a grant of 100a on Cane Creek (DB H, p 195), which he deeded to Thomas Rogers in 1816 (DB 12, p 34O), who in turn deeded it to David Presley in 1819 (DB 12, p 217).

Several other deeds in Bumcombe Co, involved David Presley. On 29 May 1012 Jeffry Grimes sold 10a to David Presley on both sides of the French Broad River below' the Long Shoal Ford (DB E, p 1U6). In 181U David purchased UOOa on Shoal Creek from Burdits Sams, which had belonged to William Cathcart and had been sold by John Longmire, Sheriff, for non-payment of taxes (DB G, p 326). He also

FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK
Had we known last Summer about all the work involved in starting a family research association, it might never have been attempted. However, in all our ignorance we innocently plunged into the task, and here we are after six months of work still hoping and wondering if our organization will ultimately succeed. The chores of adopting a Constitution & Ely-Laws, electing officers, drawing up an initial budget, and filing Articles of Incorporation with the State and an application for tax-exempt status with the IRS have been completed, or are underway.

We also have adopted guidelines for a research program to be pursued by the Association (see elsewhere in this issue). This organization is extremely fortunate to have found James Anderson as its Research Director. Not only does Jim live in the Salt Lake City area where he has access to the vast collections of the Genealogical Library located there, but he is an extremely enthusiastic researcher besides. It's his wish that the specific research projects of the Association match as closely as possible to the interests of our members.

With that in mind, you are urged to assist and cooperate with Jim when he calls upon you to help with research projects and with the development of our archives. At the present time he asks that each of you provide the following information to him as soon as possible:
1) the counties or other areas in which you would personally be most interested in seeing Presley/Preslar/Pressly research begun or continued.
2) family group sheets for your direct family line. If you earlier sent in only pedigree charts, please supplement these now with the family group sheets for your line.
3) copies of any Presley/Preslar/Pressly family Bible records in your possession or to which you have access.

We have decided to try to produce three newsletters per year initially. These will be published in January, May, and September, and we hope to be able to include in the next few issues all the census data that Jim is collecting, along with some other interesting material. Don't forget that we need your contributions to this newsletter as well. If you have queries or some data to share, send it along to us. You needn't have written a complete family history in order to have something!to share; perhaps it's only a single record or bit of data that you have come across somewhere, but it may be just the thing for which someone else has been searching.

Prior to incorporation the Board of Directors officially adopted our Constitution & By-Laws as they appeared in the first issue of the newsletter with two additions, as follows:

Article VII. (with the initial paragraph): This Association shall be formed for literary and educational purposes within the meaning of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1954 of the United States of America.
Article IX. Board of Directors. When incorporated, the number of Directors of the corporation shall be three, and they will serve for a period of two years. The President, Vice-President, and Treasurer shall serve as Directors of the corporation.

Our drive for new members continues. A membership committee is being forired, and notices about our organization have been placed in the Nov.-Dec. 198$ issue and ^he Jan.-Feb. 1986 issue of the Genealogical Helper. If you have kinfolk who might be interer-ted in supporting these research efforts, please invite them to become a member of our family organization.

BUNCOMBE CO., N.C., DEEDS (Continued):
purchased another 300a of William Cathcart's property from Burdits Sams on Shoal Creek (DB H. p 6), and he sold both of these tracts in 1820 to John Johnston (DB 23, pp it?! & U82). David Presley also bought another 300a of William Cathcart's land on Barn3 Creek in I8llj from Peter Long, who had obtained it from Sheriff John Longmire (DB 16, p 95).

In 1818 James Long and James Graham sold 50a lying on the French Broad River to "David Presley (DB 11, p 402). On 13 Feb. 1835 John Patton deeded to James, David, and William Presley 100a of land on both sides of Shoal Creek where "Anthony Presley now lives" (DB 19, p 447).

There is no other mention of David Presley in the Bunconbe Co, deeds, until 1P?U (DB U9, p 127).

PETER PRESLEY - Peter Presley is listed in the 1810 census of Buncombe Co., aged over 45. He was not listed in subsequent censuses of Buncombe Co.
For land conveyances involving Peter Presley, see under David Presley.

ANDREW PRESLEI - Andrew Presley was in the 1800 Buncombe Co. census, born before 1755s but he did not obtain any land in that county until he received a grant of 100 acres on both sides of Shoal Creek on 16 Dec. 1803 (DB 9, p 269). On 20 Apr. 1804 he deeded 50a on the south end of the grant to William Presley (DB 8, p 194), who on the same day deeded this 50a to Anthony Presley (DB 12,p 291).
No further record of Andrew Presiey appears tin the Buncombe Co. deeds<, ANTHONY PRESLEY - Anthony Presley is in the Buncambe Co. censuses from 1810 to 184O and from these records we know that he wss born between 1765 and 1770. William Presley deeded to Anthony Presley 50a of the original 100a grant made to Andrew in 1803 (DB 12, p 291). On 11 Feb. 1817 Anthony signed two deeds to John Longmire, one for 50a on the south side of Shoal Creek with the improvements made, by Andrew Presley (DB 12, p 227), and the other for 50a on the north side of Shoal Creek (DB 12, p 228), both tracts being part of the 100a grant made to Andrew in 1803.

Page 14

Interestingly, Anthony Presley deeded the same 100a tract on 18 July l844 to William J. Browne (DB 23, p 277).
On 17 Dec. 1822 Anthony purchased 250a on Rose Creek from Peter Long (DB 16, p 94), then of Haywood Co. This was part of the land of William Cath-cart which John Longmire, Sheriff, had sold to Burdit Sams. On 7 Apr. 1833 Anthony deeded 102a, apparently part of the 250a tract mentioned above, to Abraham Creasman (DB 25, p 134). This was said to be where Anthony Presley "now resides", and this tract is interesting because it turns up later in the Presley land conveyances in Buncombe Co. (see William H. Presley).
In 1835 Anthony was living on a tract of land which was purchased by James, David, and William Presley.(DB 19, p 447).

WILLIAM PRESLEY - William Presley does not appear in the Buncombe Co. censuses until 1830, when there were two William Presleys, age 20-30; and in 184O the two William Presleys were agg 30-UO. In 1850 there were three heads of household named William: William, age 72; William Jr., age 37; and William H., age 39.
In l804 William Presley obtained 50a from Andrew Presley (DB 8, p 194), which he deeded on the same day to Anthony Presley (DB 12, p 291). In 1835 John Patton deeded lOOa on Shoal Creek to James, David, and William Presley (DB 19, p UU7), the land where Anthony Presley was then living. On 22 June 18U7 Henry Griggs sold to William Presley 50a "adjoining lands formerly belonging to Anthony Presley" (DB 2h, p 51^)• , For further data on William H. Presley see under that individual.

JAMES PRESLEY - James Presley is listed in the 1830 census and in the 181|0 census as age 30-UO. In 18UO James Jr. was age 20-30. In 1850 James Presley was head of household and listed as age 51, with his wife Mary, age 44.
In l82it James Presley and his wife Mary, along with Samuel Taylor and his wife Elizabeth, Charles Lance, and Peter Lance, sold 200a on Shoal Creek, "our ninths parts of said land", to Samuel Lance (DB 25, p 202). In 1835 John Patten deeded 100a on Shoal Creek to James, David, and William Presley (DB 19, p 447).

JOHN PRESLEY -"In 1820 there was a John Presley, age 16-26, and a John Presley, age 26-U5. In 1830 one John Presley was age 20-30, and one John Presley was age UO-50. Neither John was listed in the 18UO census, but in 1850 there was a John Presley, age 54 a John R. Presley, age 25; and a J.R. Presley, age 27.
No land conveyance for a John Presley occurs in Buncombe Co. prior to 1867.

JOHN R. PRESLEY - John Robert Presley, born 26 Mar. 1815, died 11 Nov. 1900, married to Jane Elizabeth Roach (information from Lillian Stumpp) was listed in the 1850 census as age 27.
On 15 Aug. 1867 he purchased 27a on Bradley's Branch from Franklin B.' Garland (DB 32, p 297). In 1896 J.H. Weaver, tax collector, sold this tract where Presley then lived to A.H. & C.E. Lyman, who sold it the following year to J.S. Presley (DB 103, P 391; DB 103, P 407). John R. and his wife Elizabeth "quit claimed" this land to J.S. Presley in a deed on 19 Nov. 1897 (DB 104, p 18).

Our Research Director advises that the census records presented here should be used cautiously. These records may contain errors or omissions resulting from such problems as:
1) Families were missed by the census taker then, just as they are today, and perhaps even more so in the earliest censuses.
2) The census taker often misspelled surnames, so indices will not list families in a way that we now easily recognize.
3) The person compiling the index may have misinterpreted the name, so that the family appears in a different part of the index and is not located.
4) A mistake might have been made in copying the information from the census records themselves.
5) Typographical errors may have been made in transcribing the data into the newsletter.
6) Misinterpretation of data may result from the fact that children listed in a family group may be grandchildren, nieces, nephews, etc., rather than sons and daughters, and the oldest listed persons may be parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc., rather than the head-of-household.

WILLIAM B. PRESSLEY

On the morning of October 17, the spirit of William Burrows Pressley, Christian gentleman, took its flight. He was born in Williamsburg County, S.C., eighty-three years ago.

During the War between the States, William Pressley was a cadet at the Military Academy of South Carolina, just a boy of sixteen when, in 186U, his battalion was ordered into the field under the command of Maj. J.B. White. On December 25, the battalion was ordered to James Island, where it remained until after the evacuation of Charleston. In February, 1865, it was ordered into North Carolina, but was shortly recalled, being State troops, and he was at home on furlough when the end of the war came.

Early in 1869, he, with his mother, sister, and brothers, two of whom were Colonels John G. and James F. Pressley, moved to California, going via the Isthmus of Panama, as the transcontinental railroad was not yet completed. He engaged in ranching near Rio Vista until 1910, when he moved to Berkeley, where he resided, at the time of his death.

He was a gentle, courteous, hospitable Southern gentleman, and was beloved and honored by all who knew him. His memory will loag be cherished by Joseph LeConte Chapter, U.D.C., which bestowed upon him the Cross of Honor, and of which he was an honorary Member.

He is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son, also seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

RESEARCH GUIDELINES

(Ed. Note: The Executive Committee has adopted the following proposal as a general guideline by which the Association will pursue its research goals. This is a flexible program which may be revised or altered as it seems appropriate or necessary to fulfill the aims of the Association.)

General Long-range Goals:
1) To find all Presleys for which records are extant and to place them in the overall Presley family tree.
2) To place all of these records on a computer disk that could be copied for any member who requests them at cost.

Specific Short- and Medium-range Goals:
1) To collect census data:
     a) To collect census records for all states for all variations of the Presley name for 1790 thru 18UO, using the published indexes.
     b) To collect census records for all Southern states for 1850.
     c) To collect census records for Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania for 18$0, and for the additional Northern states when interest in them arises.
     d) To collect census records of all Southern states for i860 which have published indexes. 2) To begin a collection of Presley Bible records.
3) To start a library of published, and unpublished, books and manuscripts
on the Presley families.
4) To obtain military and pension records for Presleys who served in the Revolutionary War, War of l8i:2, and Civil War.
5) To try to obtain members who'will represent the various Presley/Preslar/ Pressly families, and when these families are extensive, to represent the various branches of the families.
6) To search for additional information on Anthony(#5), Martinus(#9), and Peter(#10) Presley/Preslar.
7) To research the following records for Presley, where it is believed that family members resided:
     a) wills
     b) land conveyances
     c) marriage records
     d) court minutes
8) To search for genealogical sources and records which may not have been microfilmed and made available at the genealogical library in Salt Lake City. These may include such sources as:
     a) church records and depositories
     b) miscellaneous estate records
     c) land grant offices
     d) cemetery inscriptions
     e) diaries and other family records
     f) Masonic and other fraternal organization records
     g) manuscript depositories of university and public libraries
9) To compile family group sheets by all members of the Association on their direct Presley ancestral lines, and such collateral lines as possible.

Page 20

General Principles to be followed:
1) The Research Director, with the assistance of the research committee and the general approval of the Executive Committee, will make the decisions as to what specific projects will be undertaken by the Association at nny given time.
2) The Association will undertake specific projects which it feels will raost benefit the interests of its members at the time, and will do so as time and funds allow. While members will be encouraged to suggest geographic areas in which they are interested, and the Research Director will try to include these areas in his plans, no specific research will be done exclusively for individual members.
3) Every attempt will be made to make records and the results of research available to members. As much data as possible will be published in the newsletter. Other data in the Association archives will be available to members upon request and upon payment of a fee to cover the cost of copying. Inquiries and requests addressed to the Research Director should be acconroanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope for a reply.
It) The Research Director will select certain genealogical record groups to be researched. He may, for example, choose certain land, estate, court records from selected counties (those suggested by members when possible), and will copy or abstract (or ask other persons to do so) these records for the Association archives. Members who are most interested, willing, and able, will be asked to organize, analyze, and summarize these various groups of records in the form of a report. Each record group with its accompanying "Summary List and Report" will constitute a "unit of research" that can be shared with other members, and eventually used in the compiling of a complete family history.
£) Members who have access to record depositories and sources outside of the genealogical library in Salt Lake City are asked to donate their time and efforts to copying or abstracting Presley/Preslar/Pressly records for the Association archives. However, any fees or expenses incurred by individuals will only be reimbursed by the Association upon prior approval by the Research Director.
6) Individuals are urged to contribute copies of their personal research, family group sheets, family records, etc. to the Association archives. Every member is also urged to assist as he or she is able in the genealogical research which the Association is undertaking toward its goals.

A Summary List and Reoort should include the following:
1) A title (example: Buncombe Co., N.C., Deeds).
2) The name of the compiler of the report.
3) Date.
4) A cover page listing the names of all Presley individuals mentioned in these records, with the inclusive dates within which they appeared in the records.
5) A complete list of the records included in the compiling of the report. These may be listed alphabetically, chronologically, or in such way as it seems most useful. This listing should include the following where possible and applicable:
     a) source (book, page, etc.)
     b) date written
     c) date recorded, proved, etc.

Page 21

     d) name(s) of principals in document
     e) location, acreage, when applicable
     f) witnesses' names
6) An analysis of the records which briefly summarizes what can be learned about each Presley individual mentioned in the records. Each record should at least be mentioned in this summary, and the compiler should indicate any conclusions that can be drawn as to family relationships, period of residence in a particular county, or other pertinent genealogical facts derived from these records. When census data or other records can be correlated with these records, either from this county or other counties, this should be included in the commentary. A clear distinction should be made between obvious fact and speculation.
7) The inclusion of abstracts of each record, or land plats in the case of land conveyances, is encouraged, but optional.

THE PRESLEY/PRESLAR/PRESSLY PRESS

(Ed. Note: Scattered amongst many reference books is a large amount of Presley/ Preslar genealogical data which has already been published over the years. This department of the newsletter will be used to bring some of this material togeth er. It will be presented just as it is extracted from the references with no effort made to interpret or relate ;it to known Presley family trees. Readers are invited to contribute material ;to this column, and they are asked to comm ent on any data which appears here jand that they can relate to other research or to family lines.)

T.M. PRESLEY

Born in Putnam County, Ga., in 1835, T.M. Presley went to Texas in i860, where he enlisted in the Confederate army in the spring of 1861 at Tyler as a member of Company K, 3d Texas Cavalry, with which command he served continuously until the close of the war, and was in its every engagement. He was brave and courageous, never known to shirk a duty, always obedient to his superior officers. I know whereof I speak, having slept under the same blanket with him during the war.

Comrade Presley was twice married, first to Miss Rosa Tunnell, who died about the close of the war. His second wife was Miss Belle Pounds, whom he married in 1866, and to them were born four daughters and three sons. His death occurred at Fort'Worth, Tex«, on the 18th of December, 1917. He had reached the ripe age of eighty-two years. (Sira Florence, Grand Saline, Tex.)
