Query:
I am seeking any information regarding the forebears of my g-grandfather, Eli Presley. The name Eli seemed to be a popular one among the Pressleys/Preslars during the last century in what is now Union County, NC and at least three appear to have coexisted at the same time. I feel fairly certain that all were related but I have not been able to find the connection. In addition to my Ancestor Report, I'm also enclosing one for my grandmother, Sophronie Meggs (Meigs ?) since these German families from that area seemed to be pretty well intertwined. I think there's a pretty strong possibility that the name Meggs might well turn up along with Helms, Harg (r) ett, and others.
I will appreciate any information you can give me and will be happy to reciprocate to whatever
degree I am able.

I have done quite a bit of research on this family (Thomas and Jane/Jennea Presley. I am a descendant of Barney Harrison Presley, son of Thomas.) and have a lot of material on them. I have a copy of Richard C. Fulcher's latest book on the Presley family history. (Editor's note: This letter is dated July 19, 1995.) The information he has on Barney Harrison Presley and his family contains errors that have been passed on by several other persons. If anyone is interested in this family they might want to contact me. Barney was my great-great grandfather. He lived and died in Leake County, Mississippi and is buried near Carthage, MS, my home town. Barney lived in Henderson Co., Term, before moving to Mississippi. One of his sons, Alexander, moved to Arkansas and I am trying to locate his family. My great-grandfather was Barney's son, Elias Harris, and he was visiting his brother, Alexander, when he enlisted in the Confederate Army at Johnsville, Ark. There is an Alexander Presley and Sallie listed in the household of James Martin on the 1860 Johnsville, Ark. census. I also found the marriage license for James A. Presley and Sarah Ann James, 23 April, 1860. It states that they were married at the home of James A. Martin. Any help on this family will be appreciated.

Editor's Note:
When sending in information for the Newsletter, please use months instead of the number of the month. It causes some confusion depending on if you use military type of dates or regular dates (military=3 March 1996 or regular-March 3, 1996) and sometimes I am not sure which is being used. If there are date errors in any of your families, it is because of this factor. I apologize for the errors and will correct them when you let me know.
We elect officers at this time of year once more. I have contacted each officer to see if they would retain their office. If I did not receive a response, I assume each agreed to serve another two years. Officers sheets are to be sent with dues which are also now due. A '97' on your newsletter means you are paid for the 1997 year and do not need to send dues. If you still have 96- before your number, your dues are now due. Please try to have dues and votes in before December. Members not paid after December 3 1 will not receive anymore Newsletters.
Hope you enjoy this newsletter. As always, Carol Hicks, Editor
