Thomas and Elizabeth (Duncum) Norman

This Thomas was born in 1707 in Stafford, Virginia and was buried in the same county having died March 02, 1785.

Thomas Norman III married Elizabeth Duncum on February 21, 1736 in St. Paul’s Parish, near King George (the county seat for King George County). There are no death or birth record for this family in the St. Paul’s Parish records.

Elizabeth Duncum was born in 1714 in Virginia and died October 11, 1771. She is buried beside Thomas in the Thomas Norman Cemetery in Stafford County, Virginia (see below).

This couple lived in the Aquia Creek area and were members of the Overwharton Parish where his family record is said to be found on page 88 of the Overwharton Parish records.

Page 88:

Normand, Thomas Son of Thomas and Elizabeth, born August 10, 1746
Normand, George Son of Thomas and Elizabeth, born June 25, 1743
Normand, James Son of Thomas, born September 13, 1740
Normand, Ann Daughter of Thomas, born February 14, 1750

Other children not listed in this Parish record includes:
Issac born 1738
Elijah born in 1740 in Stafford County, died 1811 in Anderson County, Tennessee
Henry born about 1752 and married Annie Cockerham

Here is a little about St. Paul’s Parish:

This is about miles down the road from Cleydael, where Rt. .206 and rt 218 intersect

St. Paul’s Parish is one of three original Episcopal parishes of Colonial King George County (Hanover and Brunswick being the other two). St. Paul’s is probably the oldest dating back to 1660. St. Paul’s was formed as the lower parish of Stafford County, which had been formed from upper Westmoreland County. The earliest recorded services were in 1667 at the home of Robert Townsend of Chotank (named after an Indian village once there)

Chotank area

Two earlier wood-frame churches constructed about 1690 and 1725 respectively preceded the present brick building, constructed in the late 1760s

Past Rectors of St. Paul’s and St. Paul’s - Hanover-with- Brunswick ParishesLower Stafford/Chotank/St. Paul’s jointly with upper Stafford/Overwarton Parish
The Rev. Morgan Godwin, 1667-1670
The Rev. John Waugh, 1670-1700
The Rev. John Frazer, 1701-1704
Vacant, 1704-1711
The Rev. Alexander Scott, 1711-1722
St. Paul’s Parish
The Rev. David Stuart, 1722-1749
The Rev. William Stuart, 1749-1796

So it looks as if it was probably Rev. David Stuart who married our Thomas and Elizabeth.

Both Thomas and his son George made Revolutionary War Veteran claims:
NORMAN, THOMAS Public Service Claim Died Mar 2, 1785, 73 years
NORMAN, GEORGE Public Service Claim Born Jun 1743 Died Jun 1807

Thomas and Elizabeth are buried in the Thomas Norman Cemetery. I have seen the following descriptions of it’s location.

1. . About a mile from Decaturs Store in upper Stafford County is a Norman family cemetery. The oldest three tombstones are inscribed as follows:
"In Memory of Mrs Elizabeth Norman who departed this life January ye 20 1771 in the 57th year of her age."
"James Norman son of Thomas and Elizabeth Norman who departed this life October ye 11th A.D. 1777 in the 32 (?37) year of his age."
"In Memory of Mr Thomas Norman who departed this life March 2nd A.D. 1780 in the 73rd year of his age."

2. This cemetery is located on Quarry Road (Route 692.) The cemetery is located about 200 yards opposite 98 Quarry Road in the woods near an old homesite.
