England blacksmith & Susanna his wife, for 48 lb. in hand paid hath sould unto George Corwine merchant & his heirs for ever his dwelling house shop barne or other outhouse thereto belonging together with 16 acres of upland more or less & 6 acres of meadow more or less all wch upland & meadow except one acre of ye sd meadow or there abut is bounded by the land of John Sutherick on ye north & ye land of Thomas Goldthoite formerly Ed Harnets senr in ye east & ye land of Bregett Giles on ye west & brookes by river running through ye said meadow & ye other acre of meadow is betweene ye meadow land of ye sd Briget Goiles & Tho: Goldthoit neere ye dwelling house of Sam Ferry heir in ye river as by deede da: 10 March 1657/8 appeareth.

Know all men by these presents, that I Charles Gott of Wenham in the county of Essex in new England having full power & authorytic given & granted unto me by Mr. Hugh Peters, some tymes, pastor of the Church of Christ in Salem, as his agent or aturney in these parts, to act in his behalf, in his name therefore, & to his only use for & in consideration of the summe of thirty pounds sterling alredy paid paid in London, have bargained & sold & by these presents doe bargaine & sell & alien unto George Corwin of Salem in the county aforesd merchant, four acres of pastor idge, be it more or less, lying & being scittuat in Salem aforesd adjoining to the land of Mr. Ranlph Foggeonye north side, & of Mr. George Emery on ye south, & being bounded on the east with the river & on the west with the high waye; to have & to hould the said four acres of land, with the appurtenance thereunto belonging unto the sd George Corwin his heirs & assigns for ever,a nd the said, Charles Gott doth for himselfe his heirs executors & administrators farther covenant & promise to & with the said George Corwin his heirs & assignes, to graunt unto him quiet & peacable possession of the promises & every ___ these of without any maner of let, trouble or molestation by him ye sd Charles Gott, his heirs executors or administraters or by his theine, or either of theire meanes consent privity or procurement in witness whearof I have hear unto set my hand & seale this first day of Feby in the yeare 1659.

Be it knowne to all men by these prisents that I, Georg Corwin of Salem, in New England, merchant, for & in consideration of the sume of one hundred & five pounds, to me in hand, had the receipt where of I doe acknowledge & therewith fully satisfied & paid; have bargained & sold, & doe by these prisents bargaine, sell, alieane, assigne & sett over unto Job Swinerton of ye place aforesd, yeoman, (Junir) two hundred & eighty acres of upland, be it more or less, selttual & being in the township of Salem aforesd, betweene the and of Robert Goodall on the west, & the land of Thomas Putnam, formerly the land of Phillip Cromwell on the east, having the land of Robt Britt & Job Swinerton Senior one the south & thence downe to the river commonly called ye greate River, thirty acres of which land was formerly the land of John Bridgman as also twenty five acres of meadow, be it more or less, nine acres of which said meadow is scittuate & being on the other side of the greate River aforesaid, betwee ye meadow of John Putnam on the west & Richard Hutchesson one the east; the other sixteene acres of meadow bounded by the aforesd, upland & river, or neere adjoining to the river, upon a straite lyne from bound tree to bound tree, neere ye river side, excepting one acre more or less, lying & being between the said river & ye lands of ye above sd Goodell, all which aforesd bargained primises, that is to say two hundred & eighty acres of upland & twenty five acres of meadow, more or lesse, as it lyes bounded, with all the timbers, commons, privilidges & appeertenances thereunto belonging. I the sd Gerog. Corwin doe hearby covenant & primise for myself my heirs & sucessors, to & with the said Job Swinerton Junr his heires & assignes, to warrant, acquit & defend the right & title thereof unto the sd Job Swinerton, his heires & assigns forever, against all p’sons laying clayme there to or any pt thereof by from or under one or my heires, executors or administrators or any of them & that it shal be lawfull to & for the said Job Swinerton, his heires & assings forever heareafter peaceably & quietly to have , hold, occupy & injoye to him & them ^ teire use & uses all & singular the afore bargained primises & ever pt & p’cell thereof with all its appeertenances free & cleare; and lastly Elizabeth Corwin, the wife of me the sd Georg Corwin doth by these presents fully & freely give, graunt, & yield up all her right, title, dower & interest, of & into the said primises unto the said Job Swinerton, his heirs & assigns forever; In witnesse whereof I the sd George Corwin & Elizabeth my wife, have hearunto set our hands & seals, this eighteenth daye of January, one thousand, six hundred & sixty one, with one word blotted out, & the words (or neere adjoining to ye river upon a Straite lyne from bound tree to bound tree, neere the river side) first interlined & farther its to be understood that there is to be severall waies allowed, reserved by the towne upon allowance for common use alredy given.

Be it knowne unto all men by these prisents that I Job Swinerton of Salem in New England, yeoman for & in consideration of seventy eight pounds & fifteene shillings all rcd paid in hand to Mr. Georg Corwin of Salem, merchant, by William Cantleburye of Salem aforsd, yeoman, according to my the said Job Swinertons order, where with I doe acknowledge myself to be fully satisfied & paid; have bargained & sold, & doe by these prisents bargaine, sell, alieane, assigne & sett over unto the said William Cantleburye, three quarters of all that meadow & upland wich I the said Job lately bought of Mr. George Corwin aforesd, as is exsprest at large with the bounds thereof in a deed, bearing date this 18th January 1661, which said upland & meadowing containes in the whole, about three hundred & five acres, be it more or lesse. I say I have bargained & sold as aforesd three Qurters of the above sd upland & meadow, unto the said William Cantlebury (excepting twenty acres of upland, out of the sd three quarters) reserved upon agreement for my own p’s’ use which sayd land meadow & upland, lyes all of this side ye river, called the great River, as it lyes devided, that is to say the aforesd land, betweene me the sd Job Surinerton and the sd Cartlebury by Nathanyell Putnam, Joseph Huchesson, John Swinerton & Nathanyell Ingerson, being mutualy chosen to divide the said land & bound the same betweene them; & lay out ways for theire own convenyences, that is to say, one high waye over the River to the meadow, that was formerly Joseph Pope’s & one highway to the meadow of Job Swinerton senyir which is to say a pack & prime way for ye sd Job & William, & theire heirs & assignes forever, which said bargained primises is lying in the bounds of Salem & bounded on the west with a white oake tree next the river, next adjoining to Robt. Goudell & one the east with the land of Thomas Putnam. To have & to hould the aforesaid three quarter pt of upland & meadow, excepting twenty acres as aforsd, as it now lyes & is bo9unded, with all the timber waies easmitt privilidges & appurtenances thereunto belonging unto the said William Cantlebury & to his heires & assignes, to his & therie or any of theire p’s’ use & behoope for ever, without any let ior molestation or incumbrance whatsoever, from me the said Job Swinerton Junyr my heires or assignes, or from any other p’son or p’sons, whatsoever laying clayme thereunto, by from or under me, or any other from me and to the true p’formance of the p’mises, I doe lynd me my heires, executors & administrators, firmly by these p’sents, and in writtnes heareof have set to my hand & seale, this 18th day of Januarye, one thousand, six hundred, sixty one. Its to be understood, that there is severall waies to be allowed for common use, over the land reserved by the towne, upon allowance, alsoe it is to be understood tht the bounds by the river side, runs upon a straite lyne, from bound tree to bound tree, som distance from the river.

I the within named John West for & in consideration that Mr. George Corwin of Salem in New England, hath given his bond in the sum of fourer hundred pound sterling, for the payment of the sum of three hundred & fiftie pound sterling by the value thereof in specie, as by ye said bond appeareth, bearing date with these prisents have assigned this prisent deed with all my estate, right, title & interest, in & to the within named mesuage or tenement, and upland & meadowes, with the hereditaments & appurtenances thereto belonging ; To have & to hould unto ye sd Mr. Gerog Corwin, his heires, executors & assignes, from the day of ye within named date, untill that the sd bond, be fully satisfied & paid & the sd Mr. George Corwin, his heires, executors & administrators be discharged of & from the same over & besid the said messuages, upland & meadowing. Know all men by these prisentt, that I Roger Perston of Salem, in the County of Essex, husbandman for a valuable consideration or summe of money & goods in hand pd : have bargained & sold & by these prisents, doe bargaine, aline & sell, assigned & sett over unto Capt George Corwin of the same town, merchant, all my visible estate here in Salem consisting of moveable goods, that is to say, come, cattle, hay & household stuffs, or any thing where of I the sd Roger am proprietors to have & to hold the said estate, with the forementined piticulers, & all my right, to the & interest, of & into the same, unto the said Capt. Corwin, his heirs & assigns forever, and I the said Rober Preston, doe for my selfe, my heires, executors & administrators, further covenant & pimise & agree to & with ye said Capt. Corwin, his heires & assignes to warrant & defend the said bargaine & sale & to grant hm quiet & peaceable possession of the primises & every pt thereof ag’st all pisons laying clayon thereto; the piticulers of this estate before mentioned, are in Cattle : fourer oxen, fourer yearling steers & fifteen swine young & old, as also all the corne which ye sd Roger shall plant or sow this years ensuring; in witnesse whereof I ye sd Roger Preston have hereunto sett my hand & seale, this ninth day of February in ye yeare of our Lord God, one thousand, six hundred, sixty fourer 1664/65. Know all men by these prisents that I George Corwin of Salem in ye County of Essex in New England, merchant, having beene administrator of John Slaughter of Marblehead in the County aforesd fisherman (lately deceased) for a valuable consideration oto me in hand alredy payd; have bargained & sold & doe by these prisents bargaine, sell, aliene, assigne & sett over unto Frances Johnsen of Marblehead aforesaid fisherman, all & evereye part of the visible estate, formerly in the possession of thee said John Slaughter & contained in the inventory of the sd estate, brought into the County Court, held at Salem after his decease that is to say, one dwelling house & gr9uond belonging thereunto, scittuate in Marblehead aforesd, between ye land of Richard Read on the one side, & Samuel Condy on the other side, together with the household goods thererunto belonging & whats9oever is mentioned & expensed in ye sd inventory. To have & to hold the sd whole estate, house & loand with all the appurtenances there unto belonging together with all my right to the & interest of in & to the same unto him the sd Frances Johnson, his heirs & assins forever. George Corwin is listed as a “Selectmen of the Towne of Salem” (also in Vol. 2 Page 401) along with William Hathorne, William Browne, Walter Price, Edmond Batter, Henry Bartholomew & Tho. Sothrop.
Note: A selectman was said to be : “The office of selectman, unlike some other offices in colonial America, was not imported from England, but gradually evolved in New England. From the beginning, the selectmen exercised the general power to superintend the concerns of the town. Originally, they only implemented the decisions of the frequent town meetings which were held to decide nearly every detail of town business. As town meetings became more formal and were held at less frequent intervals, the selectmen acquired more discretionary power.“

George Corwin of Salem, mercht where by order of Jeremiah Bootman, Atturney for ye sd Mathew hath full power to sell & dispose of ye same : Know ye therefore, that wee, the sd George Corwin & Jeremiah Bootman for a valuable consideration to us in hand alredy paid by William Cash of the same towne, where with we acknowledge ourselves fully satisfied & contented : have bargained & sold & do by these present bargaine, aliene & sell, assign & sett over unto ye sd William his heirs & assings, the sd p’cell of land before mentioned together with the dwelling house built upon it as it stands now unfinished.
