Willis Alston and Betsy (Boon) Hawkins



Willis Alston Hawkins was born in 1794/96 in Buncombe County, North Carolina. He served in the was of 1812, serving in Capt. Cunningham's Company of the Georgia militia (Pension S. # 26030 SC 16559), and later migrated from North Carolina to Morgan County, Georgia. In 1816 in Madison County, Georgia, he married Elizabeth "Betsy" Boon. To this union was born the following known children: 1) Dr. Sion Boon Hawkins, born in 1818 in Morgan County 2) Dr. John T. Hawkins, born in 1820 3) William 4) Willis Alston Jr. born in 1825.

Willis Alston Hawkins and his wife moved to Webster County, Georgia where he was a planter. In his later years, he moved to Americus, Sumter County, Georgia to live with his son Willis Jr. An August 1969 City Directory from Americus shows him living with his son on Church Street.

Willis Alston Hawkins died in Americus, Sumter County, Georgia and is most probably buried in one of the unmarked graves in the Willis Alston Hawkins Jr. plot in the Americus Cemetery on the south side of town.
