John Thomas Hawkins was born about 1768, in Halifax County, North Carolina. He married in 1790 in Halifax County, Grizelle "Gilley" Yancy Crawford, who was born in 1772 in Wake County, North Carolina. John died about 1802 and Gilley remarried on November 26, 1804 in Greene County, Georgia, Sion Boon. Grizelle died in 1843 in Morgan County, Georgia.

To this union five known children were born: 1) Thomas 2) Alexander 3) William 4) Catherine 5) Willis Alston (our ancestor)
