Ratcliff Sr. was born in 1685 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia and lived there his whole life. While his brothers moved to North Carolina, he remained in Virginia where he was listed as a planter in the area of the Main Blackwater Swamp. In approximately 1709 he married Patience Bradshaw. At this time nothing is know of her.

To this union five know children were born: 1. Ratcliff Jr. 2. James died in 1770 3. Jacob died in 1790 4. Thomas 5. Nicholas

Ratcliff possibly married a second time in 1709 to an Olive _______. He died in 1752.
